Notes

This statue was found in quarry debris at the Prokonnesian quarries. It probably dates to the early 4th century AD and was one of a pair found on the island. The statue is almost entirely finished except for its head which is left in a part-finished state. Presumably this head was meant to be finished by either a specialist sculptor on the island or by a sculptor elsewhere, after the statue had been exported. For some reason, perhaps the death of the subject or the cancellation of the order, however, the carving was never completed.
