General view over the quarrying area on Marmara Adası (ancient Prokonnesos).
This is a view, looking north, over the main quarrying district on Marmara Adası (ancient Prokonnesos). The port of Saraylar is visible in the middle distance, the main export point for marble from the quarries. Quarrying activity on the island began in the Classical period, if not earlier, and continued through the Byzantine and Ottoman period up to the present day. The peak period of quarrying on the island prior to the modern period was the Roman period, however. Prokonnesian marble is white with fine, sometimes thicker, grey veins.
