Process
Quarrying
Description
Large amounts of stone are wasted during quarrying. The chips of stone and larger pieces visible here are the result of quarrying and squaring of material. The large block has been roughed-out and then abandoned, perhaps because a flaw in the stone was discovered.

Notes

Quarrying activity on Marmara Adası (ancient Prokonnesos) began in the Classical period, if not earlier, and continued through the Byzantine and Ottoman period up to the present day. The peak period of quarrying on the island prior to the modern period was the Roman period, however. Prokonnesian marble is white with fine, sometimes thicker, grey veins. Large quantities of roughed-out material were recovered during the clearance of ancient debris piles as part of modern activity.
