The drill is used for the hair and beard of the men on the left hand side. It is finished and seems to have been done by a different carver.

Abrasives have been used on the architecture and the clothing of the figures.

Notes

The architecture is finished, as are the hair and clothing. The faces, however, are not. A detail of the figures on the right hand side is available (PR500_03_19). The complexity of a carving project such as Orvieto is such that carving will continue on the ground while the craftsmen and material are available. The relief would then be lifted into place when the time was right.
