Evidence for working practices

1. Quarry-face

Process
Quarrying
Description
The whole of the Aliki peninsula has been quarried down to sea level. The marks of individual blocks can be seen in places. This was a popular place was quarrying in part because material could be loaded directly onto ships moored alongside the quarries. A roughed-out column drum is visible in the middle of this image which was presumably abandoned due to a fault in the stone.

2. Quarry Debris

Process
Quarrying
Description
Most of the debris visible in this image is leftover from quarrying. Occasionally larger blocks - like this roughed-out column drum - are found among this debris. This might be a reject or was never exported for some other reason.

Notes

Numerous quarries were exploited on Thasos during the Roman period, most located on the coast where the material from them could be loaded easily onto waiting ships. Both dolomitic and calcitic white marble were quarried on the island from the Archaic to the Byzantine periods. The quarries at Aliki were important sources of calcitic white marble.
