Tool: Wedge

Wedge

Wooden or metal wedges are used to split stone. Both varieties are hammered into pre-prepared holes, usually carved with a point chisel. While metal wedges are simply hammered into the stone, wooden ones are soaked with water so that they split the stone as they expand. By aligning rows of wedges a carver or quarryman can direct the line of the split. Wedges were usually employed during the quarrying process.
