Notes

This foot was carved by an apprentice sculptor at Carrara. Trainee sculptors are often given feet, hands, eyes and mouths to carver as exercises and to test their abilities. Feet like this one are typically done in their third year. Similar feet and some hands from Aphrodisias seem to attest to a similar training process there; images of these can be found under the collection of images relating to Aphrodisias.
