Evidence for working practices

1. Toolmarks

Tool: Tooth Chisel
Method: Angle: Shallow (40-50°)
Force: Gentle
Description: Tooth chisel marks are visible all over this stone except in the middle strip where a variety of other tools have been employed.

Method: Angle: Shallow (40-50°)
Force: Gentle
Description: Flat chisel marks can be seen on the left of the central band.

Description: Next to the flat chisel marks is a band of scraper marks. In this case a toothed scraper.

Description: The surface next to the scraper has been smooth with a rasp.

Tool: Abrasives
Description: At the righthand end of the middle band a patch of stone has been polished with abrasives. Only at this stage of work does the pink colouring of the stone become apparent.
