Notes

This is one of the most highly finished sarcophagi at Aphrodisias. At this detail shows, though, the level of finish is not even across the whole chest. The decoration on the lower socle, for instance, does not carry around from the front edge to the end. This lower level finish on the ends is typical of sarcophagi at Rome but is also relatively common on sarcophagi in Asia Minor which were made to be seen primarily from the front. Many of the sarcophagi at Aphrodisias have blank rear sides.
