Evidence for working practices

1. Toolmarks

Process
Roughing-out
Tool
Point
Method
Angle: Vertical (90°)
Force: Gentle
Description
The surface on the left side of this pier has been left roughed-out with the point chisel, ready for detailed carving that never took place. The border, in contrast, has been more finely worked, but still not ornamented as much as on the south and west side of the pier.

2. Block joint

Process
Placement
Description
The blocks appear to have been erected following roughing-out but before any more detailed work was undertaken since the carving on the other sides crosses the block joints without interruption.
