Description
The feet of the soldiers in the background are simply incised into the background using the corner of a flat chisel.

Notes

The foot on the right is supported by a small section of ground carved up beneath his foot. This is a common solution resorted to on the Column for reconciling the figures and the background, two stages of work which appear to have been carved as separate phases of activity.
