The curls of hair and details of the faces of the head-dresses worn by the standard-bearers are picked out with the drill.

Notes

In this image the way in which the border between spirals has been pushed down right on top of the heads of the standard-bearers below and the soldiers in the upper spiral are arranged around the projecting standards from below shows that the lower figures must have been carved first. Work on the carving, then, progressed from bottom to top.
