The right side of this side shows how damaged the surface of the Column of Trajan is in places. Toolmarks are impossible to identify in such places. Along the frieze there is reasonable variation in the handling of the portraits of Trajan. While all are identifiable as the emperor in this example he has a squarer head and shorter hair than in some of his other portraits on the Column.
