Notes

The flatness but detail of the architectural background on the Antonine panels on the Arch of Constantine can be seen in this detail. The architectural elements are very carefully handled but the buildings look more like stage sets than real structures - they are intended to act as a back-drop for the scene being played out in front of them and not to distract attention away from it.
