Notes

In this scene a dead Dacian is shown. He is presumably supposed to be lying on the floor but the perspective is slightly awkward and he looks a little as if he is flying. As so often on the Column of Trajan, we see here carvers finding a solution to a problem on the go, rather than resorting to a set model. The aim was clarity of storytelling and so flicking between points of view is common. Also on this scene, one can note the basically handled tree, which is quite different from some of the other trees on the Column; this example and others like it show that there at least two carvers responsible for trees, one who was highly precise and the other who was distinctly less interested.
