The remains of rough point chiselling can still be seen on the neck and behind the head of this figure, places which would not have been immediately visible once the object was in place.

Notes

This shield-portrait is part of a series of Late Antique portraits of philosophers from Aphrodisias, most of which were found in a large house to the north of the Sebasteion.
