The channelling tool is used, in this instance, particularly deeply around the tree in order to distinguish the tree from the background.
Notes
The soldier is lacking a tool to cut down the tree which he is supposed to be chopping. The tool was intended to be added at a later date in metal, although in this case it is difficult to tell if the hole has been drilled for the attachment.
