The portrait features of the emperor are extremely damaged here but rasp marks are visible on his clothing. Though the rasp if often used on clothing and sometimes also on faces, there is no set system - sometimes carvers use the rasp for smoothing, sometimes simply the flat chisel; they are working largely in their own way using whatever tool they feel best suits the situation.
