Evidence for working practices

1. Block joint

Description
The block line cuts through the head of the emperor Trajan in the scene on the right. If carving had taken place prior to placement, one would expect that the block line wouldn't have passed through the head of such an important figure.

Notes

The scaffolding from the restoration is visible in this image.
