Description
The top of the lower block has been roughed-out with a point chisel. It was left this way to help fit the figures together. The carving was never done in place suggesting a lack of time or money.

The surviving marks on the blocks and the lack of finish in the area of the joint suggest that the blocks were roughed-out to different levels before being put in place.

Notes

In this case it seems that the the top of the lower block was left rough to avoid problems of fitting the figure together in two parts. That it was left unfinished suggests that either money or time ran out. A detail of the block joint is available (PR500_02_05).
