The skin of the horse and the background has been smoothed with a rasp.

Notes

This image shows part of this sarcophagus during restoration, when the surface was being cleaned. The uncleaned section is marked by the red box. The style of carving on this sarcophagus is unusual and might indicate that it is actually a product of the Renaissance or later.
