Holes made by the removal of metal clamps can be seen all over the north-eastern corner of the Arch of Titus. Those responsible knew where the clamps were because the hole made for pouring in lead from the surface would have been visible. Though the clamps themselves were iron the space around them had to be filled with lead to stop the iron rusting and damaging the stone.
