Description
An ancient quarry-face (dark brown) can be seen in this image, with modern work cutting into it at the bottom. The lines on the ancient quarry-face suggest that large blocks were extracted from this area. Most of the blocks visible in this image are modern, with the characteristic parallel lines of the modern drill on their sides.

Notes

Quarrying activity on Marmara Adası (ancient Prokonnesos) began in the Classical period, if not earlier, and continued through the Byzantine and Ottoman period up to the present day. The peak period of quarrying on the island prior to the modern period was the Roman period, however. Prokonnesian marble is white with fine, sometimes thicker, grey veins.
