Point chiselling is visible on the other surfaces of the block and the column shaft. The block is stepped so that as much of its volume as possible can be used for panels for wall revetment or flooring. This was one way of maximising what could be cut out of an irregularly shaped block.
An inscription has been added to the sawn face of the block. This is an accounting inscription of the sort common at Dokimeion which allowed the authorities in charge to keep track of who was quarrying what.
The Bacakale Quarry is the largest quarry at Iscehisar (ancient Dokimeion) and the focus of modern activity at the site. Both white and coloured marble are extracted here, the latter a white-cream breccia with purple veins (pavonazzetto).
