Process: Smoothing

Smoothing

The smoothing of the surface of the stone to produce an even finish and remove most traces of toolmarks. Further smoothing can be achieved with polishing but many Roman carvers never went beyond a basic level of smoothing, usually achieved with the rasp, scraper or sometimes just the flat chisel. This is a common finish on Roman relief sculpture, especially on drapery.
