Detail of a male figure on the Arch of Trajan at Benevento. The careful treatment of this man's delicately curled hair and beard, defined using the corner of a flat chisel, can be seen in this close-up. So too can the layer of dirt caused by erosion and pollution which has since been cleaned during restoration work on this monument. The parallel lines of flat chiselling can be seen on the background of this scene; most of the flat surfaces on the relief panels of the Benevento arch were smoothed in this way while some of the flat surfaces at the bottom of the monument were left with a rougher tooth-chiselled surface.
