Rear of a roughed-out garland sarcophagus.
What the rear side of this sarcophagus shows is that the roughing-out process was sometimes divided into three stages: initial rough squaring, roughing-out of the top and bottom sections of each side, and then roughing-out of the garland scheme. All of these stages of work could have been undertaken in the quarry - and there are examples taken to this stage in quarries elsewhere - but the amount of part-finished examples from Aphrodisias indicates that at least the final stages of roughing-out were carried out in the city.
