The lower portion of this dolium, which was possibly intended to be sunk into the ground, was roughly worked with a point chisel and then left at this stage.

Description
The upper surface of this dolium is also point chiselled but much more finely than the lower half.

Notes

Stone dolia are relatively rare, normally being made in ceramic, but there are a large number of them at Aphrodisias. These vessels would have been more durable than their ceramic equivalents but considerably more laborious to produce.
