Rough marks of the point chisel can be seen on the rear surfaces of the two blocks behind this panel. This phase was undertaken before any carving of the decoration on these panels was begun.

A measuring point can be seen above the genitalia on the figure of Tiberius. To judge from its height this point was set out during or before roughing-out and used as a reference point throughout carving.
