Notes

Carving around the head of Trajan in this detail appears to have progressed from two separate directions - from the front and back of the head - and these two separate phases of work do not quite match up. This again reflects the general tendency of carvers on the Column to smooth the background by working around the forms set against it rather than working up to them.
