Description
Despite damage to the surface of the stone we can see that these delicate details were outlined against the flat background. These outlines were carved with a narrow flat chisel or channelling tool.

Notes

This is one instance in which the carvers of the spiral at the top felt that they had enough space so that they did not have to push the border down beyond the end of the military standards below.
