1. - Quarry-face

Process
Quarrying
Description
A number of high ancient quarry-faces are visible here, showing the depth of work on the site.

1. - Quarry Debris

Process
Quarrying
Description
Debris piles can also be seen all around the site. This debris consists mainly of chips of stone removed during extraction and consequent squaring of material. Around 50-60% of all the stone quarried at the site probably ended up as waste like this.

Notes

The Bacakale Quarry is the largest quarry at Iscehisar (ancient Dokimeion) and the focus of modern activity. Both white and coloured marble are extracted here, the latter a white-cream breccia with purple veins (pavonazzetto). Numerous roughed-out blocks were found during the removal of ancient spoil as part of modern quarrying activity on the site.
