1. Quarry Debris

Process
Quarrying
Description
The piles of debris visible in this image consist primarily of chips of stone leftover from quarrying and roughing-out of blocks but it also contains large numbers of abandoned blocks, many with flaws in. Quarrying is a wasteful business and 50-60% of all the material extracted probably ended up as waste in such piles.

Notes

The Bacakale Quarry is the largest quarry at Iscehisar (ancient Dokimeion) and the focus of modern activity at the site. Both white and coloured marble are extracted here, the latter a white-cream breccia with purple veins (pavonazzetto).
